How can you create a complete, well-organized picture of your finances and benefits before making major financial decisions?
Start by gathering all your information in one place. This can help you understand what you own, what you owe, which benefits may be available and which documents financial institutions may request.
Begin with your bank accounts. List every checking account, savings account, certificate of deposit, money market account and joint account. Record the institution, account type and account owner so the information is easy to find later.
Next, identify all investment and retirement accounts. These may include brokerage accounts, traditional and Roth IRAs, 401(k) plans, pensions, inherited accounts and retirement accounts from previous employers.
Gather every insurance policy, including life insurance, health insurance, long-term care insurance, homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Keep the policy numbers, provider information, beneficiaries and contact details together whenever possible.
Create an inventory of your property and ownership documents. Include real estate, property deeds, vehicles, titles and any business interests. This provides a clearer picture of your assets and how they are legally owned.
List all outstanding debts, including mortgages, credit cards, personal loans, auto loans and medical bills. Be sure to note whose name appears on each debt because ownership and responsibility may differ between accounts.
Finally, gather your estate and personal documents. These may include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, recent tax returns, marriage certificates and certified death certificates.
Keeping this financial information organized can make it easier to respond when a bank, insurance company, benefits administrator or other institution requests documentation. It can also help you make financial decisions with a clearer understanding of your accounts, assets, debts, insurance coverage and legal documents.
