How is your FERS pension calculated? The basic formula uses your high-three average salary, years of creditable federal service, and the applicable pension multiplier.
For most FERS employees, the calculation is:
High-three average salary × years of service × 1%
If you retire at age 62 or later with at least 20 years of creditable service, the multiplier generally increases to 1.1%.
Your high-three salary is the highest average basic pay you earned during any three consecutive years of federal service. The final pension amount may also be affected by survivor benefit elections, service history, and other retirement provisions.
Federal retirement calculations depend on individual circumstances. Confirm your official estimate with your agency’s HR department or a qualified federal retirement professional.
