How much does Federal Employees Health Benefits coverage cost after retirement? In most cases, eligible federal retirees pay the same share of the FEHB premium as non-Postal active federal employees enrolled in the same plan.
The federal government continues paying its portion of the premium, while your share is generally deducted from your monthly annuity. The exact amount depends on your selected FEHB plan, coverage level, and location. Therefore, it may cost a few hundred dollars per month, but there is no single price that applies to every retiree.
Remember that FEHB premiums can change annually. Retirees also generally pay their premiums with post-tax dollars because annuitants are not eligible for FEHB premium conversion. Review current rates using the official OPM FEHB premium information.
