Age 65 is primarily an important healthcare milestone because it is when most Americans become eligible for Medicare. However, Medicare eligibility alone does not mean you are financially prepared to retire.
Your real retirement age is the point when four essential numbers align: your income-producing assets, expected retirement spending, guaranteed income and retirement time horizon.
Your assets should be capable of producing enough income to cover the portion of your expenses not supported by Social Security, pensions, annuities or other reliable income sources. Your plan must also account for how many years your savings may need to last.
Retirement readiness is therefore based on your personal financial situation, not a specific birthday. When your assets, spending, guaranteed retirement income and expected retirement length work together sustainably, you may be ready to retire.
