What is the FERS Special Retirement Supplement? It is a temporary benefit paid to certain Federal Employees Retirement System retirees who leave federal service with an immediate annuity before age 62.
The supplement approximates the Social Security benefit you earned through your years of civilian service covered by FERS. It is designed to help bridge the income gap between an eligible early retirement and age 62, when Social Security retirement benefits first become available.
The FERS supplement ends at age 62, even if you decide not to claim Social Security or are not eligible for it. Social Security does not begin automatically. You must apply, and you may choose to delay claiming to receive a higher monthly benefit.
Not every FERS retiree qualifies for the supplement. Eligibility depends on your age, service history, and type of retirement. The benefit may also be reduced under an earnings test if your wages or net self-employment income exceed the applicable annual limit. Review the official OPM guidance on the FERS annuity supplement.
